Outreach: Far is My Home

Time:
Saturday, April 21, 2012 - 2:00pm

This event is part of our free Sparks of Glory educational series.

Works from three composers imprisoned in concentration camps create a program suffused with a longing to be elsewhere. Artistic Director Mina Miller contrasts SAM’s Gaugin exhibit, and the themes of primitivism in art, and non-European influences, with Haas' Four Songs on Chinese Poetry and Schulhoff's Five Pieces for String Quartet inflected with jazz, folk, and dance influences. The work from Pavel Haas and Gideon Klein's Fantasy and Fugue for String Quartet were both written in Terezín--inspiring evidence of the composers' refusal to surrender their creative spirit. Baritone Erich Parce is our guest vocalist.

Musicians: Mara Finkelstein, cello; Susan Gulkis Assadi, viola; Leonid Keylin, violin; Mina Miller, piano; Mikhail Shmidt, violin
