Music of Remembrance (MOR) fills a unique cultural role in Seattle and throughout the world by remembering Holocaust musicians and their art through musical performances, educational activities, musical recordings, and commissions of new works.
Since 1998, MOR has gained an international reputation for its exceptional work communicating the relevant moral messages of the Holocaust to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
MOR's mission is not religious, nor is its scope limited to Jewish music. Amidst the horrors of war, there were courageous artists from all backgrounds who dared to create--even in the ghettos and death camps. It is a priceless gift that much of this art has survived. Now we can relive and share this gift, this moral and artistic defiance in the face of oppression and inhumanity. We must ensure that these voices of musical witness be heard.
MOR presents two major concerts annually at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, marking the anniversary of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) each fall and Holocaust Remembrance Day each spring.
In addition to these, MOR's inspiring programs and innovative educational efforts include:
- Producing documentaries, such as the highly-acclaimed The Boys of Terezín, which recently premiered in Israel and has been featured in film festivals worldwide.
- Commissioning new works and recordings to translate the moral lessons of the Holocaust for contemporary audiences.
- Bringing educational programs to high schools and colleges across Washington State so young adults may understand the moral lessons to be learned from the Holocaust.
- Taking our free-of-charge Sparks of Glory concert-with-commentary outreach series to new communities and audiences.
As a nonprofit organization, Music of Remembrance depends on a broad network of public and private support--individual donors in particular. Through their generosity, we partner in our mission to remember. Every gift directly supports our concerts, education, and outreach activities, allowing us to serve the community through our unique and compelling programs.
Every gift, no matter what size, enables us to commission new works, perform more music, and reach more people. In addition, donors are eligible for many special benefits. Most importantly, every gift counts. You can make a difference.
