Nicolas Lell Benavides

Nicolas Lell Benavides’ opera Pepito, with libretto Marella Martin Koch, was recently premiered by Washington National Opera. Benavides has also worked with Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and Friction Quartet. This summer, he will be the first Young Artist Composer-in-Residence at the Glimmerglass Festival. Benavides was a fellow of the Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab and Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy, and recently was a composer in residence with Nomad Session and Elevate Ensemble. He has held residencies at Avaloch Farm and Visby International Composers Centre.

Upcoming premieres include work for Friction Quartet based on El Correcaminos, a narrated work for Nomad Session called Ocho Bendiciones, and an opera scene for USC’s New Opera Workshop. 

Benavides studied at Santa Clara University, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the University of Southern California.
