Free on-demand concert “Art From Ashes” marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day

SEATTLE, WA—On January 23, 2022, Music of Remembrance (MOR) presents Art From Ashes, a free online on-demand concert marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Continuing its annual tradition of honoring the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, MOR presents a chamber music program of all-new performances paying tribute to musical talents whose very existence the Nazis hoped to erase from history: Gideon Klein, Pavel Haas, Dick Kattenburg, James Simon, Viktor Ullmann, Carlo Taube, Ilse Weber, as well as two amazing but rarely performed tangos created by prisoners in Auschwitz and Buchenwald. “These composers continued to create even in the face of unfathomable persecution,” notes artistic director Mina Miller, “and we’ll never know what they might have accomplished in longer lives and in a normal world.” The works remain as a testament to courage and resilience in a time of horror. They tell stories that resonate today as strongly as ever.

MOR’s stellar instrumental ensemble, drawn from the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, features violinists Mikhail Shmidt, Natasha Bazhanov and Artur Girsky, violist Susan Gulkis Assadi, cellists Walter Gray and Sarah Rommel, clarinetist Laura DeLuca, double bassist Jonathan Green and percussionist Matthew Kocmieroski. They are joined by mezzo soprano Sarah Larsen and pianist Mina Miller. The program will also feature violinist Tokuji Miyasaka and cellist Leyna Kitahama, MOR’s 2021 recipients of the David Tonkonogui Memorial Award for Young Artists.
