Program features the world premiere of Christophe Chagnard’s Gaman,

exploring the incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry during WW II.

SEATTLE, Wash.—Music of Remembrance (MOR) presents the world premiere of a newly commissioned work at its concert at Benaroya Hall’s Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall in Seattle on May 20, 2018 at 5 p.m. Tickets: $30-$45 available online at: https://www.musicofremembrance.org/concert/spring-concert-gaman Pre-concert event: 4:15 p.m.– Sean MacLean of KING FM in conversation with composer Christophe Chagnard and art historian Barbara Johns.

Since 1998, Music of Remembrance (MOR) has commissioned over 30 new works that remember the Holocaust and honor those who spoke out in the face of injustice and persecution. That legacy continues with the closing concert of MOR’s 20th season in Seattle.

French-American composer Christophe Chagnard’s work Gaman focuses on the experience of people forced into incarceration camps because of their Japanese ancestry during World War II. The title refers to the struggle to endure the unbearable with patience and dignity. Combining traditional Japanese and classical Western instruments, this work brings a powerful story to life through testimonies of the words and images created by three artists and poets during their captivity in the Minidoka camp: the words of poet Suma Yagi, the images of Roger Shimomura, and journal entries and art work of Kamekichi Tokita and Takuichi Fujii.

“MOR was founded nearly 20 years ago to remember the Holocaust through music, and we are still deeply committed to that mission” said MOR Founder and Artistic Director Mina Miller. “The Holocaust’s legacy also calls on us to recall all victims of exclusion and persecution. With this new commission, we share important stories of Japanese wartime experience.” The program also includes August 6th by Shinji Eshima, a haunting work for violin and double bass that makes an eloquent plea about the urgency of preventing nuclear war.

In addition, the program features Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet (1923),and includes a newly discovered sixth piece. In addition, baritone Erich Parce interprets songs written and performed by prisoners in the Terezin concentration camp under the noses of their Nazi captors. It also includes the Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes for violin and piano by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, who holds the unfortunate distinction of suffering at both Nazi and Soviet hands. MOR’s instrumental ensemble, largely drawn from the Seattle Symphony, is joined by guest artists baritone/actor Erich Parce and soprano Ann Moss, and Ringtaro and Asako Tateishi of Seattle’s School of Taiko.

About Music of Remembrance: MOR remembers the Holocaust through music and honors the resilience of all people excluded or persecuted for their faith, nationality, ethnicity, gender or sexuality. In addition to rediscovering and performing music from the Holocaust, MOR has commissioned and premiered more than 30 new works by some of today’s leading composers, telling stories of loss, courage and inspiration.

https://www.musicofremembrance.org/concert/spring-concert-gaman
